Talks with Nicholas Sturt & Lee Walther
We are really excited to announce that we are holding a series of talks: “Living gracefully on this planet” surrounding nature & engaging with the countryside.
Noted speakers, will be exploring nature in the local area and Sullington through the ages in the beautiful 16th century Old Workshop. Book your tickets here.
The esteemed Nicholas Sturt and Lee Walther will be joining us to deep dive into wildflowers on chalk grassland and the role that humans can play as positive keystone species to change the narrative of the future.
Nicholas Sturt: “The Wildflowers of Sullington Downs in Focus”
Nick is particularly interested in the history of Sussex botany and those special plants which have been known in sites for hundreds of years – some from as long ago as Roman and Mediaeval times. Since 2012 he has been Chairman of the Sussex Botanical Recording Society. The SBRS records wild flowers, grasses, sedges, rushes and ferns, as well as mosses and liverworts, across Sussex, sharing these records with the Sussex Biodiversity Record Centre and the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland.
Join us as Nick throws us into the world around us but with a different lens. A laser eye focus on wildflowers that potentially get taken for granted.
Lee Walther: “Sullington Warren: Heaths & Humans”
Next, Lee Walther takes us on a journey to help us explore the role that humans can play as a positive keystone species in the landscape. As a National Trust Ranger, Lee is particularly interested in the intersection of where ecology, archaeology, history, subsistence strategies and humans meet.
Each speaker will talk for roughly half an hour. There will then be a joint Q&A session and we’ll be providing yummy tea and cake afterwards. We are really excited to host both speakers and we know this will be a really fun and informative afternoon.
The talks will take place in our cafe space at The Old Workshop. There will be no reserved seating.
Book your tickets here. Explore our Events page for the rest of the talk series and other things going on at the farm.
