Art Workshops with Kate
We are really excited to announce that we have upcoming workshops with the fantastic Kate Tugwell, all based around painting and creativity.
At their core, all of Kate’s workshops aim to create a friendly, cheerful environment where people feel supported to experiment, learn new skills and make something they’re proud of or continue to work on something that you might have already started.
Kate’s workshops are very process-led, with the intention of connecting with the innate creativity that already exists within each of us. For centuries humans have instinctively created, but many people believe they’re no good so they don’t try. Kate’s aim is to reinvent the purpose of painting as a means of reconnecting to ourselves. The classes are relaxed and Kate offers guidance and structure but also encourages freedom of expression and risk taking. Artists need to bring their own brushes and paints for these workshops.
All of Kate’s workshops here include tea/coffee and a two course lunch with cake in the afternoon – homemade by us at the cafe.

Sound bath & meditative painting, 14th November 10am – 4pm
To begin the day, Marisa from Hema Sounds will hold a sound bath. Marisa uses instrumental and natural sounds therapeutically to offer relief from stress and pain, to kickstart self-healing and to help you unwind at the beginning of the day. We will then have a two course vegetarian lunch, all handmade by us at the cafe.
Kate will then guide you through different perspectives of a still life. You’ll be starting with drawing skills. Learn how to measure and understand the ‘shape’ of composition, tonal values and perspective with easy, enjoyable exercises that are not only fun but set a firm foundation in how to draw basics. Kate will then lead you to develop your painting and placing colour on the medium.
£135pp. Please do get in touch with Kate here for more details or to book.
Introducing Oils – 21st November, 28th November & 5th December (3 day course)
Oils are a sumptuous medium to work with and we’ll use low odour thinners in this spacious barn to achieve the effects for textured ‘alla prima’ paintings as well as techniques to create layered paintings with depth.
The unique possibility of continually reworking and layering oils offers the art student unparalleled possibilities in the depiction of form, light and colour. Our course offers a clear and comprehensive introduction to the often intimidating basics of oil painting.
Experimentation in this field of painting is almost endless, and our tutors are committed to arming you with the knowledge to manipulate this medium in the manner most suited to your unique aesthetic.
Guests will all have tea/coffee and biscuits on arrival, a two course vegetarian lunch and cake in the afternoon on all days.
£295pp for all three days
